Michael Schmidt wins Sonnenbühl mayoral race with a landslide 74.5% victory
Michael Schmidt, a 37-year-old lawyer and civil servant, has been elected as the new mayor of Sonnenbühl with a resounding 74.53 percent of the vote. Schmidt, who ran on the campaign slogan 'Fresh Air for Sonnenbühl', will succeed Uwe Morgenstern and take office on January 1, 2023.
Schmidt's victory was notable, given the strong competition he faced. Gerrit Elser secured 13.75 percent, Nadine Carle received 10.35 percent, and Alexander Gräff trailed with a mere 1.35 percent. Despite this, only one ballot featured a write-in candidate, accounting for a minimal 0.03 percent of the vote.
During his campaign, Schmidt launched the initiative 'Sonnenbühl Is Your Beer Too', providing drinks to residents at construction sites and local clubs. This interactive approach, along with his campaign slogan, resonated with voters. Schmidt plans to continue this engagement, stating he will 'go where the people are' and be out among the residents.
Schmidt is set to become the fourth mayor in the 50-year history of the municipality. He will undergo a smooth transition with outgoing mayor Uwe Morgenstern. Schmidt has also expressed his intention to join the Sonnenbühl Anniversary Choir for their 50th-anniversary celebration concert on November 21 and sing along.
Michael Schmidt's election as the new mayor of Sonnenbühl signals a clear mandate for his vision of 'Fresh Air' for the municipality. His interactive campaign and strong majority indicate that residents are eager for his leadership. Schmidt is expected to take office on January 1, 2023, following a smooth transition and will likely be seen among the residents, as he plans to 'go where the people are'.
