A sonic boom was detected at 05:13:31, followed by an autopilot and throttle disconnect alarm, according to the Kazakh Ministry of Transport's preliminary report, released on Feb 4. A second later, the aircraft's primary control systems failed, with hydraulic system pressure plummeting to zero by 05:13:34, locking the control surfaces in a neutral position. Soon after, the pitch trim system malfunctioned, triggering cabin depressurization.

At 05:14:58, the captain contacted the cabin crew, who reported that two seats had exploded, causing passenger disturbances within the cabin. The crew then endeavored to reach the alternate airfield in Aktau for an emergency landing at 05:42. However, a TERRAIN TERRAIN PULL-UP alarm was activated at 06:19:13, sounding twice more before the aircraft crashed at 06:27:58.

The aircraft, operating on a regular passenger flight from Baku to Grozny, had previously attempted landing twice in Grozny before the crew decided to return to Baku.

The preliminary report provides photographs and graphical evidence of hydraulic system damage before impact. Investigators suspect the damage was caused by external objects penetrating aircraft components, with both through and non-through (blind) damage noted during a visual inspection.

In collaboration with representatives from Brazil, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan's law enforcement agencies, the investigation team has retrieved foreign objects from the blind damage areas for further examination. A substantial number of such objects were collected for analysis.

Initially carrying five crew members and 62 passengers, the crash claimed the lives of 38 individuals, including the aircraft commander, co-pilot, senior flight attendant, and 35 passengers. Among the dead were six Kazakh citizens, 25 Azerbaijanis, and seven Russians. Twenty-two individuals survived the tragedy, with two flight attendants and 27 passengers sustaining injuries. The aircraft was completely destroyed and partially burned.

Though the preliminary report remains subject to updates as the investigation unfolds, a final report is expected to be published after a comprehensive review of all materials. Investigators include representatives from Embraer S.A. and AZAL.
