Military helicopter, an Osprey, performs an emergency landing at Iwate Airport in Japan.
In an unexpected turn of events, a U.S. Osprey military transport aircraft made an unannounced landing at Odate-Noshiro Airport in Kitaakita, Akita Prefecture on Friday. The landing, which took place around 9:50 a.m., did not disrupt civilian air traffic, according to reports.
The specific reason for the precautionary landing was not disclosed. However, it is worth noting that recent days have seen repeated precautionary landings of U.S. Osprey aircraft in Japan, often due to reported mechanical issues or technical glitches.
On a separate occasion, a CV-22 Osprey made an emergency landing at Hanamaki Airport in Iwate Prefecture on July 24, due to a mechanical malfunction during a flight from Misawa Air Base to Yokota Air Base. This incident was also described as a "precautionary landing."
The U.S. Air Force has emphasised that such landings are made to avoid potential complications arising from any reported issue. The Osprey's history of mechanical issues and its unique tilt-rotor design contribute to cautious operational practices, ensuring safety and allowing for prompt inspections and repairs.
The Iwate prefectural government was informed of the U.S. Osprey's landing at Iwate Hanamaki Airport shortly beforehand by the transport ministry's branch at the airport. No injuries were reported in the wake of either landing.
It's important to note that the U.S. Osprey that landed at Odate-Noshiro Airport is not based in Yokota Air Base in Tokyo, unlike the CV-22 Osprey transporter. No details about the type of U.S. Osprey that landed at Odate-Noshiro Airport have been reported.
This incident in Akita Prefecture follows another similar incident that occurred six days prior in the same prefecture, where an Osprey landed for a safety inspection and remained on the ground for over seven hours. These incidents underscore ongoing concerns about the reliability of the Osprey aircraft, which have been involved in several incidents in recent years, including a fatal crash off Yakushima in 2023.
Despite these incidents, the proactive approach of making precautionary landings ensures safety and allows for prompt inspections and repairs to mitigate any potential dangers. The U.S. military continues to prioritise safety in its operations in Japan.
