Saxony’s Economics Minister Dirk Panter has warned residents to exercise caution with fireworks this New Year’s Eve. His appeal follows a series of severe accidents, including two fatalities during last year’s celebrations. Authorities are urging people to prioritise safety to avoid preventable injuries and damage.

The 2024/25 New Year’s Eve celebrations in Saxony ended in tragedy for two families. In Oschatz, a 45-year-old man died after lighting a large firework bomb. Meanwhile, in Hartha, a 50-year-old lost his life while handling professional-grade pyrotechnics. These incidents highlight the risks of mishandling explosives.

Every year, fireworks cause not only injuries but also significant property damage. Mailboxes, windows, and other structures often suffer destruction from improperly used firecrackers. Panter stressed the importance of using only certified products and following safety guidelines. At the recent Innenministerkonferenz in Bremen, **Ulrich Mäurer (SPD)** pushed for a complete ban on private fireworks. His proposal reflects growing concerns over the dangers posed by unregulated pyrotechnics. Panter, however, focused on responsible use rather than an outright prohibition.

The minister’s warning comes as Saxony prepares for another round of celebrations. His goal is clear: to ensure residents welcome the new year without accidents or harm. Officials continue to monitor the situation, hoping for a safer holiday period this time around.
