Minneapolis woman shot by ICE officer leaves behind three children and unanswered questions
A 38-year-old woman, Renee Good, died after an encounter with an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minneapolis. The incident, captured on cellphone video, has drawn widespread attention and raised questions about the circumstances of her death.
Good, also known as Becca, was described by loved ones as a caring mother of three and a kind neighbour. Officials and family members have since offered conflicting accounts of what happened that day.
The shooting took place during an immigration-related operation. According to a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson, Tricia McLaughlin, officers opened fire after people began blocking them. Cellphone footage later showed an officer ordering Good out of an SUV. The video then captured the vehicle reversing and moving forward before gunshots rang out.
Good’s former father-in-law, Tim Macklin Sr., remembered her as an 'outgoing' and 'gentle' person who adored her children. He confirmed that she had a 6-year-old son with his son, Tim Macklin Jr., and two other children from a previous relationship. Macklin Sr. also revealed that Good and her son visited him about twice a year. The Minneapolis City Council later stated that Good was killed while 'caring for her neighbours'. Macklin Sr., however, believes the officer was struck by the car she was driving. Meanwhile, Senator Tina Smith expressed 'heartbreak and anger' over the incident. Good’s partner, Rebecca Brown Good, is now caring for their youngest son following her death.
The investigation into Good’s death remains ongoing. Her family, friends, and local officials continue to seek answers about the events leading up to the shooting. The case has highlighted tensions between law enforcement and the community in Minneapolis.
