Minnesota Doesn't Need These "Solutions"
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has signed two executive orders aimed at reducing gun violence. The measures, announced on 16 December 2025, focus on stricter regulations and a new state council to tackle extremism. Both orders push for stronger policies within existing legal boundaries.
The first order calls on lawmakers to pass sweeping gun control laws. It includes a proposed ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. Additionally, it launches a public education campaign to promote ‘red flag’ laws and mandatory secure gun storage.
The same order also directs state agencies to gather data from insurers on the financial toll of gun violence. This information will be used to assess economic impacts and inform future policy decisions. The second order establishes a **Statewide Safety Council**, a multi-agency group tasked with developing a prevention and preparedness strategy. Its role includes combating radicalisation, domestic terrorism, and politically motivated violence. The council will coordinate efforts across government and law enforcement to address extremist threats. Neither order names a specific official responsible for implementation. Instead, they outline broad directives for state agencies and legislative action.
The two orders mark a push for tighter gun laws and a structured response to violent extremism. The Statewide Safety Council will now work on a detailed plan, while lawmakers consider the proposed bans and data collection. Implementation will depend on legislative approval and inter-agency cooperation.
