Misinformation Video Circulating: Nepal Protests, Not 'Islamist Structures' or Mosque Arson
A video circulating online since 10 September 2025 has sparked controversy, with claims it shows Nepal government actions and Gen Z youth retaliation during protests. The video, shared on TikTok, purports to display demolished 'Islamist structures' and a mosque set ablaze. However, investigations reveal a different story.
The video, in fact, shows three clips of buildings on fire. The first clip displays arson at the house of Birgunj mayor Rajesh Man Singh during September 2025 Gen Z protests. The second clip shows the Birgunj Metropolitan City office building engulfed in flames during the same protests. The third clip reveals the condition of Singh's house after the vandalism and arson.
Contrary to the video's claims, no evidence supports the Nepal government demolishing 'illegal Islamist structures' or Gen Z youths setting fire to a mosque in retaliation. The video does not show any mosque or Islamic structures being targeted. Instead, it captures vandalism and arson at the mayor's residence and the city office building.
The video, circulating since 10 September 2025, predates the October 2025 Janakpur communal clashes. It is being falsely shared as visuals of Nepali youth burning down a mosque and a government crackdown on illegal Islamic structures. Authorities urge the public to verify information and not spread misinformation.
