Mississippi takes over Okolona schools amid deepening financial crisis

The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) has taken control of the Okolona school district after years of financial trouble. State officials will now dissolve the local board and appoint an interim superintendent to oversee recovery efforts. The small district, serving around 517 students, has struggled with budget shortfalls for some time.

This is not the first time the district has faced state intervention. Between 2010 and 2012, Okolona was classified as a District of Transformation due to financial and accreditation issues. Despite past challenges, the district recently earned a B grade in the 2025 Mississippi Accountability Report.

The district will now operate under state oversight until financial stability is restored. The interim superintendent will follow a structured plan to address the budget crisis. Meanwhile, the emergency funds provided will keep schools running while repayment terms are finalised.
