Moabit hilft: Berlin's Unsung Heroes Supporting Refugees Amidst State Failures

Diana Henniges established 'Moabit hilft', a Berlin association supporting refugees and marginalised individuals, in 2013. This organisation, founded amidst the chaos of 2015, has taken on crucial tasks originally meant for the USA. Meanwhile, Berlin's refugee policies have faced criticism for their lack of sustainable structures and increasing restrictions on refugee rights.

Moabit hilft e.V. was born out of necessity in 2015, not as a colourful association, but as civil society's response to the state's failure. In 2015, Berlin was in crisis, with thousands camping outside LAGeSo without supplies or basic amenities. Instead of learning from this, Berlin dismantled the system, shuffling refugees between offices and reducing support.

The state office was renamed to the State Office for Immigration in 2023, but the situation remains challenging. Refugees still face cramped living conditions, lack of privacy, and increasing obstacles due to tightening asylum laws. Moabit hilft has stepped in, supporting refugees in integration, accommodation, and administrative processes. However, these tasks should ideally be handled by the state.

Moabit hilft's founding in 2013 marked a turning point in Berlin's refugee support. Despite the state's failures and the ongoing challenges, this organisation continues to fill gaps in refugee care. However, the state must learn from past mistakes and invest in sustainable structures to truly support refugees and integrate them into society.
