Modified e-bike rider faces charges after 80 km/h traffic stop
Police have seized a heavily modified electric bicycle after a routine traffic stop revealed serious legal violations. The 60-year-old rider now faces criminal charges for unlicensed driving, lack of insurance, and suspected drug use behind the wheel.
The vehicle, held together with duct tape, was capable of reaching speeds up to 80 km/h—far exceeding legal limits for bicycles in Germany.
The incident began when officers pulled over the rider during a standard check. They quickly discovered the bicycle had been retrofitted with a powerful electric motor, pushing its top speed to around 50 mph (80 km/h). Under German law, such modifications reclassify the bike as a small motor vehicle, requiring registration, insurance, and a valid driving licence.
The driver, a 60-year-old man, admitted to smoking cannabis a few days earlier. A preliminary drug test then returned positive for both amphetamines and cannabis, prompting officers to take a blood sample for further analysis. He also lacked the necessary licence to operate the modified vehicle. Authorities impounded the bike and notified the road traffic office. The driver now faces criminal charges for violating mandatory insurance laws and driving without a licence. Administrative proceedings for driving under the influence of narcotics have also been launched.
The case highlights the legal risks of modifying electric bicycles beyond regulated limits. The driver could receive fines, a criminal record, or further penalties if convicted. Police have reiterated warnings about the consequences of unlicensed, uninsured, and drug-impaired driving.
