Officials Guard Construction Site - Inmates Missing in Moltsfelde - Moltsfelde prison delays adult cell openings until January 2024
Delays in completing new adult cells at Moltsfelde prison have drawn criticism from FDP politician Bernd Buchholz. The facility’s opening has now been pushed back from November 26 to January. Despite the setback, 17 correctional officers remain assigned to the site, preparing for its eventual operation.
The prison was originally set to open in late November, offering at least 30 spaces for adult inmates. However, construction delays have forced a postponement until January. Meanwhile, 17 officers—15 temporarily reassigned from other locations and 2 already on-site—are handling planning, training, and construction oversight.
The prison’s delayed opening means adult cells will not be ready until January. Until then, staff will continue preparatory work without full operational duties. The facility will eventually serve both adult and juvenile inmates, alongside its role as a Kiel Prison branch.
