Monument Honours Controversial 'Motorola' in Birthplace Ukhta

A monument honouring Arseny Pavlov, a controversial figure known as 'Motorola' who fought in the Ukraine conflict, has been unveiled in his birthplace of Ukhta. Pavlov, a native of the Republic of Komi, was remembered for his role in the Donetsk People’s Militia and his participation in key battles. Born on February 2, 1983, Pavlov rose to prominence during the conflict in Eastern Ukraine. He served as the first commander of the Sparta Battalion, earning the call sign 'Motorola'. His leadership was marked by his involvement in the defence of Sloviansk, the battles for Ilovaisk and Debaltseve, and the fierce fighting for Donetsk Airport. Following his death in a terrorist attack in Donetsk on October 16, 2016, Pavlov was posthumously honoured as a Hero of the Donetsk People’s Republic. The initiative to immortalise his memory in Ukhta was supported by local authorities, public and veterans' organisations, and residents. A QR code on the monument's base offers visitors insights into Pavlov's life and achievements. The monument serves as a reminder of Pavlov's role in the conflict, a complex figure whose legacy continues to spark debate. While some view him as a hero, others see him as a symbol of a divisive conflict. Regardless, the monument stands as a testament to the impact Pavlov had on the region and its people.
