Morris Brown College secures $810K for campus security after threat scare
Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia, has secured $810,000 to boost campus security. The funding arrives just days after the college faced an emergency alert due to a threatening email. Several organizations and public figures have contributed to the initiative.
The bulk of the money comes from a $700,000 federal grant sponsored by Congresswoman Nikema Williams (D-GA). She included the allocation in the 2024–2025 federal appropriations to help students feel safer on campus. The funds will pay for upgraded safety technology, new emergency response plans, and a full risk assessment. Additional staff will also be hired to strengthen public safety.
Other contributions include $60,000 from the Sixth Episcopal District of the AME Church. Rapper Tip 'T.I.' Harris donated $50,000, which will specifically fund endowment scholarships.
The announcement follows last week's emergency alert at Morris Brown College. A threatening email, targeting several Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), prompted the lockdown and heightened security concerns.
The combined funding will now allow Morris Brown College to implement immediate safety upgrades. New technology, staffing, and response strategies are expected to reduce risks on campus. The measures come as part of broader efforts to protect students and staff following recent threats.
