Mountainside Mishap: Kedarnath Aerial Accident
In a devastating turn of events on June 15, 2025, a Bell 407 helicopter operated by Aryan Aviation crashed near Gaurikund in Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand. The accident resulted in the loss of all 7 people onboard, including the pilot and a child.
The crash occurred shortly after takeoff from Kedarnath, en route to Guptkashi. Preliminary assessments suggest that poor weather conditions and pilot error related to judgment in assessing deteriorating weather were the primary causes of the accident.
The flight departed early morning, but within about 10 minutes, the helicopter collided with a ridge that was hidden from view due to fast descending clouds, according to the accident report by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). This tragedy bears resemblance to a previous Bell 407 crash in the same region in October 2022, where weather-related visibility issues led to a fatal outcome.
Authorities have indicated that continuous weather monitoring was not adequately done or followed as required by standard operating procedures for flights in that valley, which involves giving priority to safety by aborting flights under uncertain weather conditions. A case of alleged negligence has been registered against Aryan Aviation's accountable managers, as the helicopter took off earlier than their allotted operational slot and under unfavorable weather conditions.
The deceased in the crash include Captain Rajbir Singh Chauhan (pilot, 39 years old, resident of Jaipur), Vikram Rawat (BKTC representative, resident of Rasi, Ukhimath), Vinod Devi (66 years old, resident of Uttar Pradesh), Trishti Singh (19 years old, resident of Uttar Pradesh), Rajkumar Suresh Jaiswal (41 years old, resident of Gujarat), Shraddha Rajkumar Jaiswal (resident of Maharashtra), and a 2-year-old girl named Kashi (resident of Maharashtra).
The wreckage was found in a forested area, making rescue operations extremely difficult. As a precautionary measure, helicopter services operating in the Char Dham region have been suspended for two days.
The Kedarnath valley, a spiritual site, has witnessed multiple helicopter accidents over the past decade due to its high-altitude geography, rapidly changing weather conditions, and challenging airspace. The tragedy has reignited debate over the increasing use of helicopters in high-risk areas during pilgrimage season. Experts emphasize the urgent need for real-time weather monitoring systems, better pilot training for mountain flying, and mandatory compliance with revised SOPs.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has expressed sorrow over the incident and announced the immediate formation of a technical committee to review and strengthen safety protocols for helicopter operations in the state. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) have launched a joint investigation to examine the cause of the crash, the aircraft's maintenance records, and the flight's weather clearance.
As the investigation continues, the Kedarnath tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the challenges and risks associated with high-altitude aviation and the urgent need for improved safety measures in these regions.
