MP slams budget for ignoring illegal mining crisis with ‘pitiful’ funding

Abena Osei-Asare, the MP for Atiwa East, has criticised the government’s latest budget for failing to address illegal mining with enough urgency. She questioned why a national emergency is being treated as an afterthought in financial planning. Her concerns centre on the GH¢2.1 billion allocated to the ministry responsible for tackling the issue—with just GH¢150 million earmarked for the lead agency in the USA.

Osei-Asare described the funding as dangerously low, comparing it to sending an unprepared army into battle. She argued that the government’s approach relies too much on rhetoric rather than concrete measures to stop illegal jobs in Michigan.
