MP's Video Mix-Up: American Jet Mistaken for UK's Tempest
Conservative MP Andrew Snowden has sparked confusion with a video misidentifying an American F/A-18 fighter jet as the UK's upcoming Tempest aircraft. The video, intended to highlight British aerospace prowess and criticise Labour's defence procurement understanding, has instead drawn attention to the importance of detail in defence procurement programmes.
In the video, Snowden accuses Labour of misunderstanding fighter aircraft. However, he incorrectly labels an F/A-18, a fourth-generation American jet unrelated to the UK's combat air programmes, as the Tempest. The Tempest, led by BAE Systems, is a sixth-generation fighter set for release in the mid-2030s.
Meanwhile, the UK continues its F-35 programme. It plans to acquire 12 F-35A aircraft, which have greater range and payload capacity than the F-35B variant already in service. This move supports NATO's nuclear-capable aircraft role.
Despite the mix-up, the video has sparked conversation about the UK's defence capabilities and procurement. The Tempest project, led by BAE Systems, remains on track for the mid-2030s, promising advanced technology to the UK's air force. The F-35A acquisition, set to complement the existing F-35B fleet, underscores the UK's commitment to NATO's defence.
