Mülheim's abandoned construction pit leaves residents frustrated after five years
An abandoned construction pit in Mülheim-Dümpten has left residents frustrated for nearly five years. Located just metres from their homes, the unfinished site has become a daily nuisance. Now, the developer claims work will finally restart—but neighbours remain sceptical. The pit sits untouched on private land, despite warning signs barring entry. Melanie Jugowitz, who lives beside it, has grown tired of staring into the empty hole. Another neighbour, Daniela Brost, worries about safety risks and pests attracted by the exposed site. The city has declared the area safe but admits it has no power to act, as the land belongs to a private developer.
Developer Marcus Breit has secured an updated permit and insists progress is coming. His plans include 31 social housing units, an underground garage, and a social services office. Breit estimates the building's outer structure will take five to six months, with interior work following later. Yet residents, weary after years of delays, question whether this timeline will hold. City officials have expressed regret over the long disruption. But with no legal way to force action, they can only wait—like the neighbours—for the developer to follow through.
The pit remains open, and construction has yet to resume. If Breit's schedule holds, the building's shell could be finished by early next year. Until then, residents will continue living alongside an unfinished eyesore, with no guarantees of change.
