Müller Boss Encourages CDU to Form Coalition with AfD - Müller stirs debate by pushing CDU-AfD coalition in Baden-Württemberg
Theo Müller, founder of the Müller dairy empire, has sparked controversy by urging a coalition between the CDU and the far-right AfD in Baden-Württemberg. His comments come after the state's recent election, where the Greens narrowly held onto power ahead of the CDU, while the AfD saw a sharp rise in support.
The election results showed the Greens as the strongest party with 30.2%, just ahead of the CDU at 29.7%. The AfD nearly doubled its share to 18.8%, while the SPD plummeted to a historic low of 5.5%. A Green-CDU coalition remained the only viable option, as a Green-SPD alliance fell short of the 78 seats needed for a majority.
Müller criticised the CDU for accepting a junior role under Cem Özdemir, the Greens' lead candidate. Instead, he proposed a black-blue alliance with the AfD, praising their lead candidate, Markus Frohnmaier. Müller also revealed a personal connection, calling AfD co-leader Alice Weidel 'a friend' after previous meetings.
The CDU ultimately continued its coalition with the Greens, maintaining the government formed in 2016. Müller's intervention, however, has reignited debate over the CDU's stance on potential cooperation with the AfD. The far-right party's growing influence in the state now poses a long-term challenge for traditional parties.
