Müller's 93-Year-Old Founder Reshapes Leadership Amid Expansion Plans
Erwin Müller, the 93-year-old founder of the Müller drugstore chain, is adjusting his role within the company. While he will remain a key figure, some of his executive powers will be shared with a newly expanded board. The changes take effect on 1 April and aim to streamline decision-making. Müller's journey began in 1953 when he opened a small hair salon in his parents' home in Unterfahlheim, Bavaria. By 1966, he had expanded the business to include cosmetics and drugstore products alongside salon services. Seven years later, in 1973, he launched his first standalone drugstore in Ulm, marking the start of what would become a major retail chain.
Over the decades, the company grew far beyond traditional drugstore offerings. Today, Müller stores stock toys, stationery, household goods, and multimedia products. The chain now employs around 35,500 people and stands as one of Germany's top four drugstore retailers. Internationally, it has focused on European markets like Slovakia and the Czech Republic, though recent plans to open up to 500 stores in China by late 2026 have been postponed to prioritise European expansion. Despite his age, Müller remains one of Germany's few entrepreneurs still actively leading a company of this scale. Under the new structure, the executive board will grow from five to seven members, all reporting directly to him. The company states these adjustments will make operations 'more agile, faster, and more professional'. Müller, however, will retain his position as the 'central authority' within the business.
The leadership changes come into force on 1 April, with Müller staying at the helm but delegating more responsibility. The expanded board is expected to help the company adapt to evolving market demands. Meanwhile, the focus on European growth continues, with plans for further development in the region.
