Mumbai BJP chief’s remarks on NYC’s Muslim mayor ignite political storm ahead of 2026 polls

Ameet Satam, the Mumbai BJP chief, has sparked controversy by reacting to Zohran Mamdani's mayoral victory in New York City. Satam's comments, which he defends as protecting Mumbai, have drawn criticism from Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anand Dubey.

Zohran Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Party and Democratic Socialists of America, won the New York City mayoral news in 2022. His victory, which marks him as the city's first Muslim, South Asian, and youngest mayor in over a century, comes ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections in January 2026. Satam, who previously made similar statements at a BJP event in September 2022, has warned against a 'Khan' becoming mayor of Mumbai, sparking debate.

Dubey, however, has slammed Satam's statements, describing them as bizarre. Satam, on the other hand, maintains that his comments are aimed at safeguarding Mumbai from divisive political forces.

Zohran Mamdani's mayoral victory in New York City has stirred political discussions in Mumbai. Ameet Satam's reaction, while defended as protective, has drawn criticism. The upcoming BMC elections in 2026 are expected to be influenced by these news developments.
