Mumbai’s ESIC Metro Station renamed after iconic 1970s devotional hymn
Two major updates have emerged from Maharashtra’s Urban Development Department. First, a metro station in Mumbai’s North West constituency will be renamed after a famous 1970s devotional song. Second, officials will meet to resolve long-standing delays in a slum rehabilitation project.
The changes follow proposals by local leaders and approval from Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who also serves as the state’s Urban Development Minister.
The ESIC Metro Station in Mumbai’s North West Lok Sabha area will now be called Hare Ram Hare Krishna Metro Station. The name was suggested by MP Ravindra Waikar and formally accepted by Shinde. This comes as part of broader renaming plans for other stations along the upcoming Metro Line 7.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will also submit proposals to rename Mogra Metro Station as Shankarwadi and the station near Ayyappa Temple in Bangur Nagar as Ayyappa Mandir. Meanwhile, Metro Line 6 remains on track to begin operations by March 2026, with Line 7 expected to follow a year later.
In a separate development, a joint meeting of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), and the Urban Development Department has been scheduled. The focus will be on resolving issues tied to the stalled Tricharan Saptakar Co-operative Housing Society Slum Rehabilitation Project. The session aims to address delays and push the scheme forward.
Elsewhere, the Sigma Heights Co-operative Housing Society in Ram Mandir has completed its registration with the housing registrar. The move clears the way for further development and legal formalities.
The renaming of ESIC Metro Station marks the first of several planned changes to Mumbai’s metro network. Officials will also tackle pending rehabilitation projects in the coming weeks. With Metro Line 6 set to launch in 2026 and Line 7 in 2027, the updates align with broader infrastructure upgrades across the city.
