Mumbai’s voter verification halted over 1.1 million duplicate entries
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has paused door-to-door voter verification in Mumbai due to challenges with 11 lakh suspected duplicate entries. Officials are now relying on photo-based checks to confirm identities before resuming fieldwork after December 10.
The BMC initially flagged thousands of potential duplicate voters across wards. In A Ward alone, 400 cases were identified, but only 18 were confirmed as actual duplicates. Many entries shared names but differed in age or address, complicating on-site verification.
With photo-based checks underway, the BMC expects to restart door-to-door verification soon. The December 22 deadline for the final list remains strict, requiring swift resolution of all pending cases. Officials are under pressure to ensure accuracy before the submission date.
