Wage Dispute Intensifies: Verdi Strikes Eleven German Airports
Munich Airport Protests Scheduled for March 10th, 2025
In a savage turn of events, the labor union Verdi has escalated its warnings strikes, targeting major airports across Germany. Employees of the public service and ground handling services at airports in Munich, Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Cologne/Bonn, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Hannover, Bremen, Hamburg, Berlin-Brandenburg, and Leipzig-Halle are rallying together.
The looming chaos kicks off on Monday, with Munich airport bracing for significant consequences. As airlines scramble to draft alternate flight plans, a spokesperson has warned of substantial disruptions to flight operations and a drastic reduction in the flight schedule. During the last 48-hour strike in late February, Munich saw only approximately 200 out of 1,600 flights taking off. While Frankfurt managed to dodge the bullet last time, this round could inflame the impact. Over 820 flights are scheduled for Munich on Monday.
Christine Behle, deputy chairperson of Verdi, explains the drastic action is unavoidable due to employers' stubborn refusal to put forth an offer and address the union's demands during ongoing wage negotiations with the federal government and municipalities. The next round of talks is set for mid-March.
Verdi's demands include an eight percent wage increase, at least €350 more per month, and better allowances for taxing shifts. The employers insensitively rebuffed these demands as unrealistic. The wage negotiations will recommence on March 14-16, 2025, in Potsdam. Meanwhile, Lufthansa and the airport association ADV have strongly condemned the strikes at transportation hubs.
