Munich’s 2026 elections heat up as Munster Union challenges the status quo
The political landscape in Munich is heating up as the 2026 municipal elections approach. The Munster Union (MU), formed in 2024, is gearing up to contest the elections as an independent voters’ association, with a focus on 'honesty, transparency, and pragmatism'. While the MU's faction leader Stefan Sorge remains diplomatic about a potential mayoral candidacy, the party aims to 'fundamentally renew' Munich, driving policy by substance rather than party allegiance.
The MU has criticized the structure of Munich’s municipal administration, particularly Department 3—Urban Development, seeing potential for optimization. Meanwhile, the MU's work in the council is defined by 'honesty, transparency, and pragmatism', with a cornerstone of their platform being the city's budget. The party rejects cuts to voluntary services and advocates for greater administrative efficiency.
The MU was formed in mid-January 2024 after seven CDU council members broke away due to persistent personal conflicts. Initially a group of CDU members who split in 2024, the MU has since been joined by additional citizens, operating as a 'voters’ group'.
The MU's potential candidate for the office of mayor in 2026 is currently discussed to be Clemens Baumgärtner from the CSU party. He leads the CSU's city council list and is their candidate to challenge the incumbent Dieter Reiter. However, Gerd Engel, a longtime local politician and former CDU district chair, has announced his intention to campaign for the MU in the upcoming elections, despite remaining a CDU member. Vivian Tauschwitz, the CDU's newly elected district chair, has stated that Engel's announced candidacy is incompatible with CDU membership.
As the 2026 municipal elections in Munich approach, the Munster Union (MU) is positioning itself as a transparent and pragmatic alternative, with a focus on renewing the city and optimizing its administration. With a potential mayoral candidate in Clemens Baumgärtner and a platform centered around the city's budget and administrative efficiency, the MU is set to challenge the incumbent mayor and other political parties in the upcoming election.
