How Dieter Reiter Stumbles in the Final Stretch of the Election - Munich's Mayor Faces Backlash Over Bayern Ties and Controversial Remarks
Munich's mayor, Dieter Reiter, is facing growing criticism just days before the city's local elections. The long-serving politician, who has held office for twelve years, is now battling accusations of misconduct, racial insensitivity, and conflicts of interest tied to his role with FC Bayern Munich.
Reiter's troubles began with his involvement in FC Bayern Munich. Initially, he denied being an official supervisory board member, only to later admit the position. Court documents later revealed he had received an annual €20,000 expense allowance from the club since late 2021—even before his formal appointment. Opposition parties quickly seized on the issue, questioning whether his dual role created conflicts of interest.
The controversy deepened when Reiter defied a court order to reinstate a 30 km/h speed limit on the Mittlerer Ring. His refusal drew further backlash, compounding public frustration.
Then, during a heated council meeting, Reiter used a racist slur in passing. Though he apologised, the remark sparked outrage and added to mounting scrutiny. Political scientist Martin Gross argued that the mayor's handling of these incidents had eroded voter trust.
The Upper Bavarian government has since filed a formal request for disciplinary proceedings against Reiter. Polls once showed him leading with around 45% support, but his recent missteps have left his third-term bid in doubt.
With the election approaching, Reiter's campaign faces serious challenges. His ties to FC Bayern, defiance of court rulings, and the racist remark have overshadowed his record. The disciplinary proceedings and shifting poll numbers suggest his political future now hangs in the balance.
