Münster and Bologna Win 2025 Award for Breaking European Borders Together
Münster and Bologna have won the 2025 German-Italian Twin Towns Award for their joint project, PIE – People in Europe. The prize honours their work in fostering cross-border cooperation and civic engagement. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Italian President Sergio Mattarella presented the award at Bellevue Palace on November 15, 2025.
The two cities have been linked by a climate partnership since 2020. Their winning project, PIE – People in Europe, focuses on youth participation, intergenerational dialogue, sustainability, and European integration. It aims to connect existing initiatives across Europe while encouraging the public to launch new ones.
With the funding secured, Münster and Bologna will now prepare for their 2026 programme. The project seeks to deepen ties between the cities and expand public involvement in European issues. The initiative will run throughout the year, featuring a mix of local and cross-border activities.
