Münster Marks 377th Anniversary of Peace of Westphalia with Historic Events
Münster is set to commemorate the 377th anniversary of the signing of the Peace of Westphalia on October 24, 2023. The city will host a series of events to mark this significant occasion, which ended the Thirty Years' War and shaped European diplomacy.
On October 24, an ecumenical Peace Vespers will be held at St. Lamberti Church, bringing together Catholic and Protestant congregations. The same day, the Hall of Peace in Münster's Historic Town Hall will be open to the public with free admission, offering visitors a unique glimpse into history with its authentically preserved interior.
The municipal flag will be raised at the Stadtweinhaus on October 24 and remain on display on October 25. Throughout the anniversary, visitors can record their personal thoughts, hopes, and wishes for peace in the 'Book of Peace' at the Citizens’ Hall of the Town Hall.
The Peace of Westphalia, negotiated in Münster and Osnabrück, continues to shape these cities today. Münster, having been awarded the European Heritage Label for its role in the peace process, invites all to participate in these commemorative events and reflect on the enduring significance of the Peace of Westphalia.
