Munich Airport to Undergo Nighttime Airfield Calibration in July 2025

Munich Airport will undergo airfield calibration from July 28 to 30, 2025, focusing on the Instrument Landing System (ILS) on the southern runway. This process is crucial for maintaining the highest safety standards for precision approaches, particularly under night or adverse weather conditions when visibility is reduced.

The airfield calibration will involve specially equipped flight inspection aircraft, such as a Beechcraft Super King Air 350, which will perform precise flight paths to measure the signal parameters of the ILS transmitter systems installed at the runway. The aircraft will follow predefined approach profiles simulating actual landing procedures while onboard avionics record ILS signal characteristics and any deviations are identified and corrected.

The ILS is a crucial component for safe navigation during the approach and landing of aircraft, especially in low-visibility conditions. By ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the ILS equipment, the airfield calibration process aims to maintain the system's compliance with international standards, as set by bodies like ICAO and Eurocontrol.

To minimize flights over populated areas during the calibration, the testing will occur daily from 10:00 PM to 3:00 AM. If there are any delays, flights will continue until all results are in. Nighttime calibration flights are necessary to avoid disrupting daytime operations.

DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH, responsible for the safety and punctuality of air traffic in Germany, is available for any questions regarding the airfield calibration at Munich Airport. The company is also working on integrating drones into air traffic, offering numerous air traffic control-related services.
