Mystery deepens after red Renault crash reveals stolen plates and a weapon

A red Renault crashed early Sunday morning at the Bonn-Nord interchange, where the A565 meets the A555 toward Cologne. The driver fled the scene, leaving behind an unregistered car containing stolen licence plates and a weapon. Authorities have since launched a manhunt, but the individual remains at large. The incident unfolded in the early hours when the Renault lost control while switching from the A565 to the A555. The driver abandoned the vehicle and disappeared before police arrived. Inside, officers found multiple licence plates reported stolen, some of which were still marked as active in official records.

Forensic teams are now examining the recovered weapon. Police have confirmed they will contact the registered owners of the stolen plates. Despite an ongoing search, the driver's whereabouts remain unknown, and it is unclear if they sustained injuries in the crash.

Public records do not specify how many vehicles have been seized in North Rhine-Westphalia over the past year due to similar suspicions involving stolen plates. The investigation continues as police piece together the events leading up to the crash. The abandoned car, unregistered and linked to stolen plates, remains a key focus. Authorities have yet to confirm whether the driver was hurt or if any further arrests are expected.
