Mysterious Odor in Family Apartment Triggers Major Response - Mystery Odor in German High-Rise Sparks Mass Firefighter Response and Evacuations
A strong, unexplained smell in a Bergisch Gladbach high-rise led to a major firefighting response on Tuesday. Around 50 crew members rushed to the scene after residents reported breathing difficulties and irritation. Three floors were quickly evacuated as a precaution.
The incident began when an unknown odour spread through an apartment, causing eye and throat irritation among five family members. Three adults showed clear symptoms, while two children—though unaffected—were taken to hospital for checks.
Firefighters cordoned off the flat and surrounding area. Specialists in protective gear collected air samples for lab testing, though their exact unit was not named. The operation lasted nearly two hours before evacuated residents were allowed back inside.
The affected apartment itself remained sealed off for further analysis.
Authorities have not yet identified the source of the odour. The two children were released from hospital after showing no issues. Investigations into the cause are ongoing, with results from the air samples still pending.
