National Poverty Conference: Affected Demand Respect and Support - National Poverty Conference demands urgent reforms in social security and support systems
The 18th National Poverty Conference, hosted by an alliance of welfare organizations, is underway, highlighting systemic shortcomings in housing, education, and mobility for those in poverty. The conference, which started on Thursday and runs until Saturday, demands urgent improvements in social security services.
The conference, attended by organizations such as Diaconia, Caritas, AWO, Parity Welfare Association, specialized federations, and DGB, has criticized the varying quality and long wait times for social counseling and psychosocial assistance across different regions. Participants have called for easy access to support services, similar to visiting a hairdresser, and better resources for job centers to provide effective support.
To tackle crises, the conference has proposed a monthly supplement of €200 for six months, in the absence of a social security law. Additionally, they have demanded an increase in the standard allowance for food within basic social security benefits. The conference also emphasizes the need for anonymous, low-threshold, and target-group-specific counseling services available 24/7 and free of charge.
The National Poverty Conference has identified key areas for improvement in social security services. By addressing these issues, the conference aims to provide more effective and accessible assistance to those in need, ultimately helping to alleviate poverty and its associated challenges.
