NATO chief warns Europe of ‘wartime mindset’ as Russia’s threat grows
Tensions over Europe’s defence readiness have risen sharply after warnings from senior officials at the Munich Security Conference. NATO secretary general Mark Rutte accused several Eastern European nations of being 'quietly complacent' about the Russian threat. Meanwhile, the UK’s armed forces minister declared Britain was now on a 'war footing' as Russian aggression escalates.
At the conference on 15 February 2025, Rutte singled out countries such as Poland, the Baltic states, and possibly Romania and Bulgaria—without naming them directly. He urged NATO members, including Britain, to adopt a 'wartime mindset' and prepare for conflicts on a scale last seen in the world wars. 'Europe is Vladimir Putin’s next target,' he warned, adding, 'We are already in harm’s way.'
Rutte’s call for a 'wartime mindset' comes as European nations reassess their defences amid growing Russian hostility. The UK’s warnings of increased threats and budget cuts have added to concerns over readiness. With officials stressing the scale of potential conflict, pressure is mounting on governments to accelerate military investment and coordination.
