NATO issues caution to Eurofighter jets stationed in Romania
In an unprecedented event, the German Air Force has taken action in response to Russian air strikes that occurred on the Ukrainian border region adjacent to Romania. The incident, which took place overnight on Wednesday, marks the first quick reaction alert of the new German deployment that began this month and is scheduled to last until March 2026.
The German combat aircraft, part of a quick reaction alert force, took off from the Romanian military airbase Mihail Kogălniceanu near Constanța. The German Air Force is currently participating in armed protective flights for NATO as part of the "Nato-Mission enhanced Air Policing South".
The German Armed Forces spokesman confirmed that Russian weapon systems approached Romanian airspace, prompting the deployment of five Eurofighters and around 170 soldiers for this mission. This is the first time this new German deployment has been in operation.
NATO scrambled two German Eurofighters in response to the Russian air strikes, as several NATO countries take turns providing support for this mission. The other NATO countries currently involved in the rapid response unit for air defense tasks to secure the alliance's southeastern flank include the United States, Germany, and Turkey, with deployments having begun in early 2024.
Fortunately, the airspace was not violated during the incident, and the aircraft landed safely without incident. The deployment is intended to help NATO partners build up military capabilities they lack, as part of the effort to secure the southeastern flank of the alliance.
This deployment is not the first time Germany has contributed to NATO's air policing mission. In fact, it has been a long-standing commitment for the country, working alongside other NATO allies to maintain a stable and secure environment in the region.
