Germany agrees to fund US weapons for Ukraine - NATO’s Nordic allies and Germany pledge $650M to arm Ukraine against Russia
NATO's Nordic and Baltic members have pledged $500 million for the PURL initiative. Germany, which has already contributed €430 million, has committed an additional €150 million to support US arms and ammunition deliveries to Ukraine. This follows a meeting of the Group of Five, established by former US President Donald Trump, to discuss European security and defense readiness.
The recent Berlin meeting of the Group of Five discussed the situation in Ukraine, with Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal joining via video link. The PURL initiative, demanded by Trump, enables European allies and Canada to purchase US-made weapons and ammunition for Ukraine. Germany's Defense Minister Boris Pistorius believes Russian leader Vladimir Putin is intentionally making this winter difficult for Ukraine and its people. Germany has reaffirmed its commitment, stating it will not abandon Ukraine in the face of Russia's ongoing attacks.
The PURL initiative, backed by $500 million from Nordic and Baltic NATO members and additional €150 million from Germany, is set to bolster Ukraine's defenses. This support comes amidst a harsh winter and ongoing Russian attacks, with Germany pledging to stand by Ukraine.
