NEOS rejects centralization, pushing bold reforms to empower Austrian municipalities
NEOS, led by Chairwoman Beate Meinl-Reisinger, have unveiled their plans for a federalism overhaul at their recent general assembly in Vienna. The party has rejected Salzburg Governor Karoline Edtstadler's proposal for centralizing healthcare and transferring education policy to states. Instead, NEOS have proposed a series of reforms aimed at empowering municipalities and simplifying cooperation.
NEOS propose to simplify municipal cooperation and mergers by offering financial incentives. They aim to eliminate duplicate and triple subsidies through a cumulative accounting system, ensuring funds are used efficiently. The party also advocates for a Dutch-style healthcare funding model, promoting regional uniformity and quality.
NEOS plan to have the federal government take full control over education personnel policy, while healthcare would be organized within regional health authorities. This shift aims to give municipalities greater tax autonomy through a direct income tax share, supporting a municipality-centered federalism. Additionally, NEOS call for an end to cross-ownership between public entities and energy providers, aiming to increase transparency and competition.
NEOS' proposed reforms, to be launched at their general assembly, focus on empowering municipalities and streamlining services. By rejecting Edtstadler's centralization proposal, NEOS emphasize the importance of local autonomy and efficient resource allocation in their vision for Austria's future.
