Nettetal converts old school into cost-saving refugee housing by 2028
Nettetal has approved plans to transform the former Buschstraße primary school into a refugee accommodation centre. The project, backed by all political factions, aims to improve integration while cutting long-term costs by around €400,000 annually from 2028 onwards. First Deputy Mayor Andreas Rudolph has already called it a 'success story' for the area.
The city council has allocated €300,000 for initial planning work. Once complete, the site will offer 81 spaces, with potential to expand to 151 by mid-2027. A second new building in Breyell will add another 70 places, bringing the total to roughly 500 in-house accommodations within five years.
Key upgrades include new sanitary facilities and an in-house kitchen. This infrastructure will replace expensive external catering services and streamline daily operations. Lawmakers also recognised the efforts of local groups, from the Social Welfare Office to schools and volunteer refugee aid organisations. The finance committee agreed that the conversion would deliver significant savings. By 2028, the city expects to reduce annual spending by about €400,000 while providing stable housing for refugees.
The project moves forward with cross-party support and a clear financial plan. With construction underway, the first phase will open at Buschstraße, followed by the Breyell site in mid-2027. The new facilities will reduce reliance on outsourced services and create a more sustainable system for refugee housing in Nettetal.
