Neuwied's Mayor Engages Students in 'Ask the Mayor' Session
Neuwied's Mayor Peter Jung recently visited Heinrich-Heine-Realschule plus (HHR) to engage with ninth-grade students in an 'Ask the Mayor' session, a format born from the city's child-friendly municipality action plan. The event aimed to actively involve young people in urban themes and decision-making processes.
Mayor Jung, a graduate of the same school 26 years ago, felt at ease and engaged during his visit. He discussed topics such as leisure opportunities, career prospects, mobility, vandalism, and participation in city life with the students. The 'Ask the Mayor' format, initiated at the end of 2023, encourages children and young people to voice their opinions and suggestions for city planning and decisions.
In this particular session, Mayor Jung invited the students to return to the Big House for further exchange. He regularly visits schools, kindergartens, clubs, and playgrounds to listen, answer questions, and gather ideas from the community. While specific teacher proposals influencing city planning were not mentioned, Barbara Hummert-Hüwelmeier, the deputy principal and coordinator of the trial phase, played a key role in facilitating the event.
The 'Ask the Mayor' format in Neuwied is fostering a direct dialogue between the city's youth and its leadership. By encouraging young people to engage with urban themes and decision-making, the city is promoting a more inclusive and child-friendly municipality.
