Neuwied's Women's Day event spotlights GDR-era struggles and modern inequalities
A local coalition in Neuwied marked International Women's Day with a public event on March 8. Over 100 attendees gathered for a reception and film screening, organised by the International Women's Day Working Group. The evening included speeches, discussions, and a documentary exploring the lives of women in East Germany.
The event was coordinated by the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) and brought together a diverse mix of organisations. Among them were the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Amnesty International, Caritas, and the CDU Women's Union. Local gender equality offices, the Neuwied Multigenerational Center, and adult education groups also took part.
The film shown, *The Unyielding 2: Good Morning, Beautiful*, focused on East German women during the GDR era. Historical records show that over 90% of women in the GDR worked in the 1980s, supported by state policies like paid maternity leave and household assistance. While education opportunities expanded—with female university enrolment rising from 25% to 50%—women still faced a double burden of work and domestic duties. Political leadership roles remained limited, despite official propaganda promoting gender equality. Edith Sauerbier, a DGB trade union secretary, spoke at the event, urging more women to engage in state elections. Stefanie Stavenhagen, Neuwied's newly appointed gender equality officer, noted the strong public interest in the film. She highlighted ongoing challenges, including Germany's persistent pay gap, where women often earn less than men for equivalent work.
The Neuwied event underscored both progress and remaining inequalities for women in Germany. Legal gender equality was established in 1958, yet disparities in pay and representation continue. The Working Group's activities, including exhibitions and educational platforms, aim to keep these issues in public focus.
