New 15-km trail honours Soviet wartime heroes near Nizhny Novgorod
A new 15-kilometre tourist trail has opened near Khvoshchevka village in the Nizhny Novgorod frontier. Called Tropa geroev tyla (Heroes of the Home Front Trail), it honours the Soviet people’s efforts during the Great Patriotic War. Visitors can explore remnants of the 80-year-old fortifications still visible along the route. The trail follows the southern section of the Gorky Defense Line, built in 1941. These fortifications once formed a key part of the region’s wartime defences. Today, walkers can trace their history while enjoying the scenic path. The Heroes of the Home Front Trail now offers a mix of education and outdoor activity. Its 15-kilometre stretch connects wartime history with the region’s natural landscape. The route stands as a lasting tribute to those who contributed to the defence efforts over eight decades ago.
