New Bangladesh government honors 1971 war martyrs ahead of historic parliament session
A delegation of government whips, led by Chief Whip Md Nurul Islam, visited the National Memorial in Savar to honour the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War. The group, which included six other whips, laid wreaths and observed a moment of silence at the altar. Their visit comes ahead of the first session of the newly elected 13th Jatiya Sangsad.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) recently formed the government with a two-thirds majority in the 13th parliamentary elections, following a 17-year political struggle and movement. The upcoming parliamentary session is set for March 12, where ordinances issued by the President during the interim period must be presented and passed within 30 days.
The government has pledged to follow its 31-point agenda and election manifesto, focusing on public welfare. Opposition members are expected to take part in the session, with calls for a constructive role in the new parliament.
The memorial visit underscores the government's commitment to remembering the Liberation War's sacrifices. The first parliamentary session will address key legislative steps, including the approval of interim ordinances. The ruling party has outlined its plans to deliver on campaign promises in the coming term.
