New Book Revisits 1977's Landshut Hijacking and the German Autumn
The Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb) has published the book Landshut 1977: Left-Wing Terrorism in West Germany as part of its Zeitbilder (Historical Perspectives) series. Edited by Annette Vowinckel, the publication is available for €7.50 in the bpb online shop.
The hijacking and subsequent liberation of the Lufthansa aircraft Landshut marked both the climax and the end of the German Autumn of 1977. Landshut 1977: Left-Wing Terrorism in West Germany examines the multiple dimensions of the hijacking and the German Autumn, tracing the history of left-wing terrorism in the Federal Republic while exploring how the event is remembered in collective memory. On March 20, 2026, at 6:30 PM, the bpb Media Center in Bonn will host a public book presentation featuring editor Professor Annette Vowinckel, with Dr. Florian Zabransky (bpb) moderating the discussion.
The panel will offer insights into the book's content and provide updates on the upcoming Learning and Democracy Space in Friedrichshafen—a project developed by the bpb, set to open in October 2027.
The Zeitbilder series presents historical, social, and cultural topics in an accessible, engaging, and relatable way. With a balanced mix of text, photographs, illustrations, and documents—alongside striking visual design—the series appeals to a broad audience, including younger readers.
