New €28.3M primary school opens with full-day learning and green energy
A new primary school building on Wiesenstraße has officially opened its doors. The Altstadtschule, now named Grundschule Am Salze, was inaugurated in a ceremony on Thursday. Built at a cost of around €28.3 million, the school will serve as a full-day facility from day one. Construction began on April 26, 2024, with the project receiving €12.3 million in state funding from Lower Saxony. The two-storey building, designed in modular timber, spans roughly 64 by 23 metres.
Inside, the ground floor features a cafeteria, after-school care rooms, and a library. The upper floors house 16 general classrooms and restrooms, enough space for 392 students across four streams. A team of 22 educators will teach the pupils. The school’s energy comes from a rooftop air-to-water heat pump, with photovoltaic panels generating additional electricity. The name change to *Grundschule Am Salze* will take effect on August 1, 2026.
The new facility marks a significant upgrade for local education. With modern classrooms, sustainable energy systems, and full-day operation, it is set to serve hundreds of students. The project’s completion follows 15 months of construction and substantial state investment.
