New Göppingen counselling centre offers lifeline to women facing violence
A new counselling centre for women experiencing violence has opened in Göppingen. The service provides early, accessible support to prevent situations from worsening. It is available to all ladies aged 18 and over in the district who seek help and want to make a change.
The centre was established by Frauen- und Kinderhilfe Göppingen, not the city administration. Funding comes entirely from two private foundations: the Stiftung Kinderschutz Göppingen and the Hildegard Bühl-Stiftung.
Initially, the city of Göppingen had issued a statement suggesting the centre was a municipal initiative. A correction was later released, clarifying that the project was independently run. The district and city have yet to fully meet their obligations under the Istanbul Convention, which requires local authorities to provide specialist counselling services. From next year, the sponsoring association will be eligible to apply for regular government grants. This could secure long-term funding for the centre’s work.
The new service offers low-threshold support to women facing violence. It fills a gap in local provisions while operating independently of the city. Starting in 2025, public funding may become available to sustain its operations.
