New Haven honors veterans with a moving Memorial Day 2024 tribute at City Hall
New Haven recently honoured its veterans with a solemn ceremony at City Hall. The event, held on Memorial Day 2024, featured speeches, music, and wreath presentations. Former Staff Sgt. Charles Pickett, a long-serving member of the city's Veterans Affairs Committee, attended. Sen. Richard Blumenthal also made an appearance, stressing the need for continued medical care for veterans despite cutbacks in Department of Veterans Affairs services.
Pickett, who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, has been on the committee for over a decade. He was joined by Kelly Kong, a contributing photographer for the event. The ceremony was a poignant reminder of the city's commitment to its veterans, especially in light of recent staff reductions at the Department of Veterans Affairs. The agency has seen a nearly 30,000 drop in employees, highlighting the importance of local initiatives to support veterans.
In November 2023, the New Haven Veterans Memorial Committee and volunteers planted memorial wreaths on the New Haven Green, adding a touch of remembrance to the city's Memorial Day 2024 observances.
The Memorial Day 2024 ceremony in New Haven served as a powerful reminder of the city's dedication to its veterans. Despite challenges at the national level, local efforts continue to ensure that veterans receive the care and recognition they deserve.
