New Johann-Weiß-Steg Bridge Opens After Years of Construction Challenges

The Johann-Weiß-Steg bridge was officially inaugurated by Mayor Alexander the Great Putz on Thursday morning, much to the delight of cyclists and pedestrians. The bridge, which spans the Kleine Isar between Innere Regensburger Street and Franz-Hoegner or Johann-Weiß-Weg, was long awaited due to the deterioration of the old structure.

The bridge's construction was no easy feat. High water levels last year posed challenges during the building of the bridge pillar and abutments. Despite these hurdles, the project progressed steadily, with the lifting of the steel bridge supports, weighing up to 45 tons each, onto the new pillar in December marking a significant milestone.

The new crossing, executed as a steel composite construction, has increased the clear width between the banks to 5.75 meters, up from 3.70 meters. This allows for the separation of traffic lanes for pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge also serves as a vital utility bridge, housing supply lines for power, data, gas, and district heating.

The project was funded with 2.142 million euros from the federal special program 'City and Country', with the total contract sum for construction amounting to 2.567 million euros. Including planning and other costs, the total project cost reached approximately 3.5 million euros.

The Johann-Weiß-Steg bridge, officially handed over by Mayor Alexander the Great Putz, is now open and serving its intended purpose. Its modern design and unique features meet contemporary requirements, providing a safe and efficient crossing for the city's residents and visitors alike.
