New Orleans races to spend £50M in FEMA road repairs before deadline
New Orleans has approved £50 million in road repairs under FEMA’s disaster recovery programme. But the city now faces a tight deadline to spend the funds before they expire. Without an extension, future work could lose federal reimbursement entirely.
The road repairs are funded through FEMA’s Joint Infrastructure Recovery Request (JIRR) programme, tied to disaster relief allocations. All spending must be completed by 31 December 2025—or risk forfeiting reimbursement. An extension request has been pending since around June 2025, but FEMA has yet to make a decision.
The £50 million in road repairs remains in limbo until FEMA’s decision. Without an approved extension, New Orleans could face unexpected expenses for ongoing projects. The city must now wait for federal confirmation before moving forward with new contracts.
