New Police Commission Ordinance, 2025 Aims to Enhance Transparency and Trust
The final draft of the 'Police Commission Ordinance, 2025' has been completed. This ordinance outlines the establishment, structure, and functions of a new Police Commission aimed at enhancing transparency, professionalism, and public trust in law enforcement.
The commission will be headed by a retired Supreme Court justice and consist of eight members. These include a retired district judge, a senior government officer, a police officer, a police academy principal, a law or criminology professor, and a human rights activist. The chairman and members will hold ranks equivalent to Appellate Division and High Court Division judges, respectively, and serve four-year terms without reappointment.
The ordinance details provisions for the commission's administrative structure, terms of service, removal, police discipline, accountability, investigations, grievance resolution, and police chief appointment. Authorities must comply with the commission's instructions or recommendations within three months and report back after implementation. A seven-member selection committee will recommend names for the commission's formation within 30 days. The draft will be sent to the advisory council for approval within the next few days.
Once approved, the Police Commission will play a crucial role in maintaining and improving police standards. Its diverse composition ensures a balanced approach to oversight and accountability, fostering a more transparent and trusted police force.
