New Special Exhibition "Homelessness in National Socialism"
A new exhibition titled 'Homelessness Under Nazism' will open in January 2026, shedding light on a dark chapter of history. Organised by the Federal Association for Homeless Assistance, the event explores the persecution of homeless people during the Nazi era and the role of the itinerant welfare system. Entry is free, though visitors are encouraged to make donations.
The exhibition runs from January 11 to February 13, 2026, at Godehardstraße 11. It officially opens on January 11 at 2:00 PM, followed by a guided tour led by historians Annegrit Berghoff and Arndt Kohlmann. Additional tours will take place on January 14, 20, February 1, and February 13.
During the Nazi period, an estimated **70,000 people** were labelled as 'asocial' or 'career criminals' and murdered. The exhibition examines how these policies targeted homeless individuals and others deemed undesirable by the regime. Beyond historical education, the organisers aim to raise awareness of **modern homelessness issues**. A lecture, *'Social Darwinism as a Motive for Right-Wing Extremist Violence,'* is scheduled for **January 29 at 6:00 PM**. Group tours can also be booked in advance via email at **[email protected]** or by phone at **+49 551 50764554**.
The exhibition seeks to connect past atrocities with present-day challenges. By offering free admission and public events, the organisers hope to reach a wide audience. The programme includes guided tours, a lecture, and opportunities for group visits.
