Ex-AfD State Leader Frisch Running for "Team Freedom" - New 'Team Freiheit' Party Gears Up for 2026 Elections in Rhineland-Palatinate
In Rhineland-Palatinate, a new political group, 'Team Freiheit', is gearing up for the 2026 state elections. Led by Stephan Klein, the group describes itself as an 'anti-party', aiming to bring citizens and experts into parliament. Notably, it does not require party membership for holding a mandate.
The group has gained attention with former AfD members Michael Frisch and Martin Louis Schmidt joining its ranks. Frisch, who was the AfD's lead candidate in the 2021 state elections, is now the second candidate on 'Team Freiheit's' list. Schmidt will run in seventh place. Frisch plans to contest the 2026 elections.
Currently, 'Team Freiheit' is chaired by Herbert Münch at the state level, with Thomas Kemmerich leading the association. The group has expressed solidarity with right-wing U.S. activist Charlie Kirk on its X profile. To qualify for the election, 'Team Freiheit' needs 2,040 more signatures by the January 6, 2026, deadline.
Despite securing 8.3% of the vote and winning nine seats in the 2021 state elections, AfD's influence is now seen in 'Team Freiheit'. The group's future remains uncertain, with no public information yet on specific candidates or positions for the Thuringian state election in 2025.
