New Yorkers Divided as Mayor's Race Tightens, Texas Governor Threatens Tariff

New Yorkers are divided ahead of the mayoral election, with many fearing that a victory for socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani could lead to an increase in antisemitism and a mass news exodus from the city. Meanwhile, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has sparked controversy by threatening to impose a 100 percent tariff on New Yorkers fleeing to Texas if Mamdani wins.

Mamdani, who is currently leading his nearest rival, former New York state governor Andrew Cuomo, by a significant 15 points, has drawn criticism from his own supporters who believe his policies could exacerbate antisemitism in the city. A recent poll suggests that nearly one million New Yorkers are preparing to flee if Mamdani wins.

Among those who have made up their minds, Mamdani enjoys 46 percent support, with Cuomo on 31 percent and Sliwa on 22 percent. However, many New Yorkers who do not support Mamdani fear that his victory could 'destroy' the city and crater its news. Mamdani's massive 35-point lead among voters aged under 30 suggests a generational divide in the city.

Adding fuel to the fire, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has promised to place a 100 percent tariff on any New Yorker who tries to flee to Texas if Mamdani is elected. Abbott is the latest Republican to condemn Mamdani, who has been referred to as a 'communist' by former President Donald Trump. It remains unclear, however, if Texas has a legal avenue to treat people like imported goods and place an extra tax on them.

As the New York mayoral election approaches, the city braces for potential changes and challenges. Mamdani's lead in the polls has sparked concern and debate, with some New Yorkers preparing to leave and others, like Texas Governor Abbott, taking a stance on the issue. The outcome of the election and its impact on the city remain to be seen.
